Nature Blossoms in Cities With These Flower-Shaped Buildings

The natural balance and symmetry of blooming flowers is admired by many creative minds and often represented in works of art, style, design, etc., and, now,… architecture. Visionary architects have turned to the flower for inspiration in designing buildings. The results are jaw-droppingly, unique, and extraordinary structures that will amaze you. ArtScience Museum

Singapore

Inspired by the lotus flower, the ArtScience Museum in Singapore is a significant architectural accomplishment on multiple levels. The asymmetrical design of ten petals of varying heights is constructed in such a way that the floral shape appears to be floating above the ground. This is due to the base of the structure existing underground. There are art galleries housed in each of the 10 “petals,” which have rectangular skylights at the tips for letting in natural sunlight. The concave shape of the roof catches rainwater which is then funneled through an opening into a waterfall that falls through the center of the building into a reflection pond on the lowest level. The rainwater is recycled to the museum’s restrooms and landscaping.

Shanghai

The Qizhong Tennis Center is extraordinary due to its flower-shaped steel, retractable roof. Inspired by the magnolia flower, Shanghai’s official city flower, the roof is built of eight steel petals that open and close in a spiral motion. This type of roof allows the stadium to host indoor and outdoor sporting events. Other sporting events held here include volleyball, basketball, and gymnastics.

Jaipur, India

Inspired by the lotus blossom, the designer of this jewelry store in Jaipur created one of the most remarkable architectural structures in India. Three large lotus petals built on each side of the rectangular base rise up into the sky like a giant bejeweled lotus blossom. During the day, the colors of the petals stand out against the sky with deep, gem-colored glass. Each leaf is rimmed with gold fiberglass representing the gold and gems housed within. At night, the spectacle is truly amazing as the petals put on a dramatic light show with LED colors pulsing and changing every few minutes. This innovative and beautiful flower building is a major tourist attraction for the area.
