A celebration observed on different days across the globe, we honor dads, fatherhood, and paternal relationships in the United States annually on the third Sunday of June. Father’s Day is celebrated all over with dads enjoying special honors and recognition, but the holiday endured a slow start before gaining the popularity it boasts today.
First celebrated just two months after the first official Mother’s Day gathering, the inaugural Father’s Day celebration took place in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia and officially served as a quiet memorial service for a large number of men and fathers killed in a nearby mining accident. In 1910, Father’s Day sprung up in Spokane, Washington where the celebration took hold and continued annually. Though the holiday gained popularity with the people, it was not until 1966 that Lyndon B. Johnson issued a presidential proclamation which urged citizens to celebrate the holiday. In 1972, President Richard Nixon finally signed Father’s Day into law, making it a federal holiday.
Anthuriums and Bamboo
Celebrated with special meals, fun activities, sermons and blessings, and gifts, Father’s Day is all about making our fathers feel special and honored. This year, take advantage of Father’s Day, using the time to ensure your dad knows he is loved and appreciated. Prepare a meal of his favorite foods, treat him to a movie or a round of golf, and mark the occasion with a gift and sentiment he will treasure for years to come. You can warm up your dad’s office or home with an exotic arrangement of tropical plants featuring lush anthurium and lucky bamboo in a stylish container or crisp, white orchids climbing a wooden ladder. These living plants are easy to care for and will remind your father of your love for years to come. For a dad with an appetite, consider filling him up with an edible gift like a gourmet gift basket stuffed with fresh fruit, gourmet cheese, and delicious crackers.
