Trias Flowers – Earth Day

Which is the real Earth Day – March 21, or April 22?

The answer is, they are both considered to be official holidays. Both observances originated in 1970, and although April the 22nd is the most popular choice for events and rallies, International Earth Day – which is observed on the spring equinox – was the first to occur.

A San Francisco activist named John McConnell had the inspiration to create a day to celebrate the Earth, as well as to promote world peace and conservation initiatives. His choice of the first day of spring for the event, he felt, was divine inspiration – spring signifies a season of renewal; and the equinox represents equilibrium, as day and night are equally represented on that annual date. The mayor of San Francisco adopted the first Earth Day in 1970; by June of that same year, the United Nations had issued a proclamation designating the day “International Earth Day”.

At the same time that McConnell was working on his campaign, Senator Gaylord Nelson was also planning a “National Teach-In” to educate college students about conservation, pollution mitigation and more. With college activist Denis Hayes spreading the word nationwide, millions showed up for the rallies; asking for legislation for cleaner air and water, as well as protection of endangered species. The grassroots effort was an astonishing success, and led to the rapid establishment of the EPA and to the passing of significant legislation. The April 22 day has enjoyed more popular appeal than the equinox date, and has been extended to “Earth Week” in many cities across the country. Right here in Miami, you can find a full calendar of events to learn about current environmental initiatives, as well as teach your children about our planet.
